Brood XIII Is Coming!
"Periodical" cicadas are expected to emerge in DuPage County this late spring.
These cicadas will have spent several years below ground developing into adults. Members of Brood XIII - sometimes hundreds of thousands of them - reach adulthood all in the same year. When the soil temperature warms to 64 degrees, these insects will emerge from the ground.
Two species of 17-year cicadas will be the most abundant this May and June in northern Illinois: Magicicada septendecim and Magicicada cassini.
